The 2014 Super Bowl has been awarded toNew York. That's right, Super Bowl XLVIII will be played at the new Meadowlands Stadium, winning the bid over the more traditional warm weather sites of South Florida and Tampa. This will be the first open-air stadium in a cold-weather region to host a Super Bowl. Funny thing is, the game actually isn't being played in New York, it's actually being played in New Jersey. So if the "Garbage State" (fact: there are more garbage dumps in New Jersey per square mile than any other state in the nation), can host a Super Bowl, is it possible it could one day be played at Lambeau Field? It has been estimated that Super Bowl XLVIII will bring in around $550 million to the New York/New Jersey economy, small potatoes to them. Could you imagine what $550 million would mean to the Green Bay economy? If there is one stadium in the league that epitomizes the history of the NFL, it is Lambeau Field. Of course there are some logistical issues Green Bay would need to address, including hotel space, infrastructure, amenities, lack of cabs, etc., but how ironic would it be to have two teams playing for the Lombardi Trophy on Lombardi Avenue on the same turf that Coach Lombardi once roamed? If cold-weather stadiums are now being brought into the mix to host a Super Bowl, then the Frozen Tundra of Lambeau Field should be at the top of the list.
