Riley Worple didn’t start golfing until he was a seventh-grader, but he was instantly hooked on the sport. When he became a student at Florence High School, he had visions of testing his skills against those of his peers in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association, but there was one problem: Florence didn’t have a boys’ golf team.
So, with the help of one friend, initially, and more as time marched on, Worple got the ball rolling on starting a team. To raise the necessary funds, he and the other hopeful golfers sought out donations from local businesses, held bake sales and provided tours of historic buildings in the area.
The experience gave Worple an appreciation of the game away from the course, while allowing him to play the game on it. It gave him a chance to see a side of the sport that didn’t include the debate of which club to use .../continued/ |
